6 signs your knee pain needs an orthopaedic consultation
Occasional aches are normal. But some knee symptoms are early signs of arthritis or a ligament injury that is easier to treat when caught early.

Knee pain is one of the most common reasons people visit an orthopaedic doctor. Many aches settle with rest, but some signs suggest a problem that needs proper examination and an X-ray.
1. Pain that lasts more than two weeks
If the pain has not improved after two weeks of rest, ice and gentle movement, it is time to get the knee examined.
2. Swelling that keeps coming back
Repeated swelling can point to arthritis, a meniscus tear or fluid build-up inside the joint.
3. Stiffness in the morning
Stiffness that takes more than 30 minutes to ease after waking up is a common early sign of osteoarthritis.
4. Difficulty with stairs or sitting cross-legged
When daily movements such as climbing stairs, using an Indian-style toilet or sitting on the floor become hard, the joint surface may be wearing down.
5. A locking, clicking or giving-way feeling
If the knee suddenly locks or feels unstable, a ligament or cartilage injury is possible — especially after a twist or fall.
6. Visible change in the shape of the leg
Bow-legs or knock-knees that are getting worse with age often mean uneven wear inside the joint.
What to expect at your visit
- A detailed conversation about your pain and daily routine
- A physical examination of the knee
- An X-ray, which is available inside the hospital
- A treatment plan — most patients start with medicines, physiotherapy and lifestyle changes
Surgery such as knee replacement is considered only when other treatments no longer give relief.
