When do you need an X-ray after an injury?

Not every injury needs an X-ray, but some do. Learn the signs that suggest a bone may be broken.

An X-ray is a quick test that shows bones clearly. It helps the doctor check for fractures and joint problems.

An X-ray may be needed if

  • You cannot move or put weight on the injured part
  • There is a visible bend or deformity
  • Swelling and pain are severe after a fall or accident
  • Pain does not improve after a few days

Before the X-ray

  • Tell staff if you are or may be pregnant
  • Remove metal items such as jewellery or belts from the area
  • Bring any old X-rays or reports

After the X-ray

Your doctor will explain the result and advise the next step, such as plaster, support or further treatment.
